In order to render my planetary bodies, I had to consider the following effects:

  1. Texture
  2. Lighting
  3. Relief
  4. Atmospheres
  5. Clouds
  6. Shadows

I'll discuss each of these in later posts, but for now here are some screenshots of the first attempt at rendering a planetary body using these effects.

Dave, that looks awesome - I love the planetary glow! Are we ever going to be able to get the source/binaries for this?

Hi Mike & Dan, thanks for the support :)
Currently I've no plans to release the code for this work, though that might change in the future. This is still very-much experimental work, for which I'm hoping this blog will serve both as a journal and as a mechanism to discuss the approach I'm taking.

Hello... I love your work on planet shaders... Your rendering is just incredible...
I would love to have your source code to play with it !
Please ! Please ! Publish the sources ! Why keeping that instead of sharing it with the XNA community :)
Hope you'll be ok with me

Thanks Eviral :D
I'm hoping to find the time to push this out to the community in the near-future...it's high-up on the list of things to do.
